Leaps of Faith

Thursday, January 03, 2019

So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you. Romans 12:1-2 (MSG)

It’s 2019 and time for everyone to publicly share their resolutions and goals. This is an exciting time for many as it allows an opportunity to look at the new year as a blank canvas where anything and everything is possible. I would love to say that these have been my feelings towards the new year but if I'm being honest, I've been scared. I'm scared of possible changes that this year can bring and the possible losses. My mind has been consumed with fear that I haven't been able to celebrate the past year or get excited about the new year.

So, if I'm looking back at 2018 right now, I would say that one of the biggest opportunities that I had was to be a part of a program that helped guide me through the beginning of a fashion photography career. This was such an amazing, challenging, and oh so scary opportunity. Like really scary.

Part of the program was a trip to be able to meet and create with others in the program. That meant a solo trip to New York City to meet a bunch of people I’ve never met….cool. Honestly, it was a really cool idea but as the trip got closer and closer I began to doubt everything. I doubted myself, my ability, and essentially God. How would I get around NYC on my own? Why did I even sign up for this program then I wouldn't have to go on this trip? (mind you, it wasn't mandatory) These were just a few of the many thoughts going through my mind.

The week of the trip finally came and minus the part that I was in the bathroom because of an overwhelming amount of anxiety I was feeling, everything else was great! I got to meet so many amazing people from around the world and collaborate with others. It was honestly an eye-opening trip. But this trip wouldn't have happened if I didn't take a leap of faith and sign up for the program or if I dropped out of the program because I was too intimidated. OR if I canceled my trip altogether because I was too scared. The unknown is so scary but I'm so much more afraid of just staying where I’m comfortable and not being used to my full ability.

The new year can be intimidating for some and if you find yourself in the same mindset that I’ve been in, I want to remind you of this passage,

25Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear. 27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” Matthew 14:25-27 (NIV)

God is with us every step of the way. This year take every opportunity you have to be courageous and follow God wherever He may be calling you. Take leaps of faith and know that it won't always be painless but it’ll be worth it. Take that risk. Don’t back down from failure. Don’t allow yourself to get to the end of 2019 and wonder what you missed out on because you weren't willing to get out of your comfort zone.

“If you’re not willing to take a risk then you’ll never live a fulfilled life.” - Joyce Meyer
